We are connected with the larger Unitarian Universalist community in several ways. You will most likely discover that your experience at First Unitarian Church becomes more meaningful to you as you develop a Unitarian Universalist identity that goes beyond our church.
First Unitarian Church is part of the Greater Pittsburgh Cluster of Unitarian Universalist Churches. First Unitarian Church is the oldest and largest Unitarian Universalist church in Pittsburgh. We have a strong partnership with the other local Unitarian Universalist churches, including the Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church on the North Side, the Unitarian Universalist Church of the North Hills in Franklin Park, the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills in Mount Lebanon, and the East Suburban Unitarian Universalist Church in Murrysville. Each of these congregations has its own style, culture, and strengths.
On a state level, First Unitarian Church is part of the Unitarian Universalist Pennsylvania Legislative Advocacy Network (UUPLAN) . This organization unites us with other Unitarian Universalists throughout Pennsylvania with the purpose of giving voice to our liberal religious values in the state legislative process in Harrisburg. UUPLAN has its annual meeting in the late fall.
On a larger scale, First Unitarian Church is part of the Ohio-Meadville District (OMD), which includes Unitarian Universalist congregations in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, most of Ohio, and the southwest corner of New York.
Each year, about forty-five people from First Unitarian Church attend Summer Institute (SI), which is sponsored by the Ohio-Meadville District. Summer Institute is a weeklong intergenerational gathering that currently takes place on the campus of Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. Approximately six hundred Unitarian Universalists from congregations in the Ohio-Meadville District attend and take part in worship, workshops, social events, religious education classes for children, outdoor activities, and many other things!
On a regional level, First Unitarian Church is part of the Central East Regional Group (CERG), which includes four Districts -- the Joseph Priestley District, which includes the corridor between Northern Virginia and Central New Jersey as well as Eastern Pennsylvania; the Metro New York District, which includes New York City and the surrounding area; the St. Lawrence District, which includes upstate New York, and our own Ohio-Meadville District.
On a national level, First Unitarian Church is a member congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), which includes about one thousand and fifty Unitarian Universalist congregations in the United States. The General Assembly of the UUA takes place in a different city each year. In 2015, General Assembly will take place in Portland, Oregon. If you would like to serve as a delegate representing First Unitarian Church at Cluster Assembly, District Assembly, or General Assembly, please contact David Herndon.
