From Our Senior Minister ~ The Rev. Dr. David Herndon

Friday, July 01, 2016

By now you may have seen the words that have been posted high up on the walls of the Sanctuary. The words are:

Gratitude            Compassion

Community         Diversity

Grace                  Hope

Reason                Spirit

Joy                      Peace

Service                Faith

Justice                 Love

The purpose of posting these words is to communicate something about the values and aspirations of our congregation to anyone who enters the Sanctuary. Most of these words appear in our seven principles or our six sources.

This is a demonstration project! The words are on paper attached to the walls by masking tape and they could easily be removed without a trace. But sometimes it is easier to communicate an idea by showing rather than telling.

Displaying these words of aspiration and value in our Sanctuary is based on a similar display at the Unitarian Universalist church of Knoxville, Tennessee. At that church, however, the words are displayed on the exterior of the building where the roof meets the walls.

Because this is a demonstration project, three things are up for discussion:

  1. Whether we would like to make this a lasting feature of the Sanctuary;
  2. What words we would like to display;
  3. What the process would be for deciding (1) and (2).

If you have any suggestions about this, please let me know!

See you in Church!

Rev. David
