From Our Senior Minister ~ The Rev. Dr. David Herndon

Monday, December 05, 2016

I am so very pleased to be working with the members of our newly-revitalized Pastoral Care Team! They are:

  • Judy Beigi
  • Christine Beregi
  • Margaret Fuhrman
  • Mary Ruth (MR) Kelsey
  • Kathy Miller

Each of these Pastoral Care Team members bring deep compassion as well as a mix of formal training and practical experience to their pastoral ministry with our congregation.

The mission of the Pastoral Care Team is to ensure that all members and friends of First Unitarian Church receive compassionate, timely, and appropriate pastoral care. Some of the guiding principles of the Pastoral Care Team are:
  • We maintain an equal standard of pastoral care for all members and friends of First Unitarian Church.
  • We understand and accept that we may be called upon to offer pastoral care in many different settings and circumstances. This includes telephone conversations, hospital visits, retirement community visits, funeral home visits, conversations at church, or conversations at public facilities such as restaurants.
  • We take the initiative to offer pastoral care proactively rather than standing by until pastoral care has been requested.

I will be meeting with the Pastoral Care Team once each month so that we can coordinate our work. Please let one of us know whenever you become aware of someone who has encountered a medical challenge or some other challenging life situation.

The Pastoral Care Team will be working closely with the Connections Team, the Covenant Group Team, pastoral contacts within each covenant group, and program staff members.

The Pastoral Care Team will also be involved with initiatives such as the Medical Equipment Loan Program, Cook It Forward, Marion’s Purse, and the Caring Connections table.

In the near future, I am hoping to expand the Pastoral Care Team to include as many as eight or ten church members and friends. Please let me know of anyone you think would be an effective member of the Pastoral Care Team.

In this holiday season when gatherings with family and friends take on a special importance, the Pastoral Care Team will be seeking to bring that same spirit of caring and compassion to our entire church community not only at this special time of the year, but throughout the entire year.

See you in Church!
