Social Action

Providing service to others is a key part of the mission of First Unitarian Church. There are many opportunities to participate in social action through a number of groups and outreach programs. We encourage you to find one or more ways to participate that are meaningful to you. Our causes in the Pittsburgh area can be found on our Social Justice page.

Social Justice

Green Sanctuary Team
The goal of the Green Sanctuary Team is to integrate the seventh principle into our daily congregational life, specifically celebration, education, sustainability, and environmental justice. We are open to new members. Contact Peg Schmidt.

This group connects First Unitarian Church with the Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network (PIIN) and the Unitarian Universalist Pennsylvania Legislative Advocacy Network (UUPLAN). Contact Irene Habermann. 

Social Justice Endowment Committee
The Social Justice Endowment Committee makes decisions about allocation of available Social Justice Endowment funds to promote the social applciation of Unitarian Universalist religious principles. By appointment only. Contact Becky Struder.

Unitarian Universalists for Justice in the Middle East (UUJME)
UUJME is dedicated to a peaceful and just resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They sponsor speakers, videos, and panels to help the community learn more about the problems and possible solutions. Contact Kathy Parker.

Social Service

Alternative Gift Market Committee
The Alternative Gift Market occurs during the holidays and is a fundraiser for a variety of local and global charities. Tables are set up on three Sundays to provide information and faciliate donations. Contact Cindy Kirsch

East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM)
This is an individual representative who attends the monthly Council of Congregations meetings. The representative's job is to disseminate to our congregation information about EECM events and needs. Contact Kim Lincoln

Khasi Hills Partnership Team
The Khasi Hills Partnership Steering Team communicates with our UU partners in the Khasi Hills of India to maintain a decade-long association and fund special projects at the Annie Margaret Barr School in Kharang, India. Contact Karen Litzinger.
