Our Principles and Mission

As a Unitarian Universalist congregation, we affirm and promote seven Principles, which we hold as strong values and moral guides. We live out these Principles within a “living tradition” of wisdom and spirituality, drawn from sources as diverse as science, poetry, scripture, and personal experience.

Our Mission

The First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh exists so that people who share Unitarian Universalist values can gather in a religious community for spiritual and intellectual growth and social transformation, with resources adequate to realize this aspiration. We have captured these aspirations into our mission.

We connect deeply in community by purposefully and regularly by

We inspire reverence and spiritual growth by consciously

We serve each other, our local community, and the world by religiously

Our Behavioral Covenant

First Unitarian Church is a sacred space for all who enter. It is the community that makes it so. Accordingly, we who enter these walls promise:

  1. To treat all people in ways that acknowledge their value
  2. To act and speak our truth with kindness and respect, aware of the differences among us.
  3. To choose our inquiries and voice our opinions with responsible attention to our church’s seven principles.
  4. To abide by our church’s established policies or pursue changing them through the democratic process.
  5. To accept each other’s’ spiritual journeys.
  6. To keep in perspective the disagreements that may arise among us and to endeavor in good faith to resolve them equitably, and compassionately.

The Board of Trustees formally approved this Covenant of Right Relations on February 21, 2018. If you believe we have not followed our behavior covenant, or need assistance to resolve a conflict, please contact the Healthy Congregation Collaborative. A member of the Healthy Congregation Collaborative will work with you, and in the even that further help is needed, will work with the Minister and the Board of Trustees in resolving the conflict.

Come to be moved and held in mutual embrace. Come and be made whole.
