Today I am Immortal - Don't Know About Tomorrow

Rev. David Herndon

All Souls Sunday

Today I am immortal
Today I feel the cool moving air on my cheeks
Today I see orange and purple and red and yellow on the trees
Today I smell wood smoke
Today I cannot imagine not being
Today I cannot imagine not being here to experience this wondrous world

Today I feel warmth coming through my skin even through my fingernails
Today I feel my heart pumping blood
Today I tasted the most marvelous blueberry yogurt on the most marvelous pancake
Today I drank the most marvelous cold water
Today I had a headache and even that was something most marvelous to experience
Today I cannot imagine not being
Today I cannot imagine no longer having conscious awareness
Today I am immortal

Don’t know about tomorrow
Might not be immortal tomorrow
Might not be so confident about being here forever tomorrow
Might not even be here at all tomorrow

But today I am immortal
Today I know that I can finish all my projects
Today I know that I can read all the books I have been wanting to read
Today I know that I can check off everything on my bucket list, and not just the short bucket list but also the long bucket list
Today I know that I will have enough time
Today I know that I will have all the time I need
Today I know that I will have all the time I could possibly want
Today I know that I will have another day and an endless supply of another days after that
Today I cannot imagine not having another day
Today I am immortal

Don’t know about tomorrow
Might not be immortal tomorrow
Might be immortal just part of the day tomorrow
Might be immortal just until the late morning tomorrow
Might be immortal just until sunset tomorrow
Might not be immortal at any time tomorrow

But today I am immortal
Today I can sit with the people who are dear to me
Today I can watch their faces
Today I can hear them speak words
Today I can hug the people who are dear to me
Today I know that it will always be this way
Today I know that I will always be able to sit with the people who are dear to me
Today I know that I will always have another day with the people who are dear to me
Today we are all immortal

Don’t know about tomorrow
Might not be immortal tomorrow
Might be an empty chair at the table tomorrow
Might wish I had chosen different priorities for my life tomorrow

But today I am immortal
Today I know that what I have accomplished will remain relevant forever
Today I know that my work my business ventures my lesson plans my music my writing my art my medical practice my legal practice my public relations practice my robotic design work my retail sales my financial planning my cooking my truck driving will remain relevant forever
Today I know that what I have accomplished will still matter ten thousand years from now
Today I know that what I have accomplished will be permanent not transient
Today I know that my work is immortal

Don’t know about tomorrow
Might not be immortal tomorrow
Might be forgotten tomorrow
Might be yesterday’s news tomorrow
Might be left in the dust tomorrow
Might be faded fallen leaves tomorrow
Might not matter tomorrow

But today I am immortal
Today I can still walk I can still talk
Today I can still eat food
Today I can still think I can still remember things
Today I am still me
Today I cannot imagine that my body would ever stop for how else would I keep going
Today I cannot imagine not being in my body for where else would I be
Today I cannot imagine no longer having conscious awareness through my body for how else would I have conscious awareness
Today I cannot imagine that I am transient
Today I am immortal for what else could I possibly be

Don’t know about tomorrow
Might not be immortal tomorrow
Might have serious problems tomorrow
Might have limited options tomorrow
Might face difficult choices tomorrow
Might be a diminished person tomorrow

Today I finally have come to know or at least to accept that I am not immortal but it was not an easy journey not easy at all
Today I watch how others have lived well even with advancing years
Today I watch how others have lived well even though they know their accomplishments are transient
Today I watch how others have lived well even though they have experienced loss
Today I watch how others have lived well even though they cannot do now what they once could do in the past
Today I watch how others have lived well even though they have devoted themselves to goals and aspirations that will never come to fruition in their lifetimes or maybe because they have devoted themselves to goals and aspirations that will never come to fruition in their lifetimes because the really important and worthwhile things take time
Today I watch how others have lived well because their sharp insistent awareness of life’s boundaries has inspired them to live more deeply here and now right here and right now

Today I feel the cool moving air on my cheeks
Today I see orange and purple and red and yellow on the trees
Today I smell wood smoke
Although I still truly cannot imagine not being nevertheless I have learned the importance of treasuring each moment of life here and now both my life and the lives of others
Although I still truly cannot imagine not being here to experience this wondrous world nevertheless I have learned the importance of loving this wondrous world as deeply as I can here and now

Still don’t know about tomorrow

Come to be moved and held in mutual embrace. Come and be made whole.
