A Life of Resistance
Livestreamed at 10:30 am What lessons can we learn from the life of Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Unitarian minister, author, abolitionist, politician, and Civil War soldier? David Hereth is a long-time member of First Church and a former RE teacher.
Our Share the Plate recipient for January is the Pittsburgh A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI)
“Breaking the Chains of Poverty” pre-apprenticeship program, designed to help participants build the skills necessary to obtain a family-sustaining career in the local building and construction trade unions, manufacturing industries and emerging energy sector. Participants in the program acquire the skills and trade certifications that help them stand out when pursuing trade apprenticeships and manufacturing careers. The program is 8 weeks long, 40 hours a week, and has strict standards with regard to attendance, tardiness, work ethic, and dedication to success. With more than 700 graduates, an 80 percent completion rate, and an 85 percent placement rate, Pittsburgh APRI and its “Breaking the Chains of Poverty” program is transforming activism into action.
SongSpace Presents Madeline Jo & Friends, with special guest Devin Russian
Saturday, January 24, 2026 7:30 pm Advance Tickets at uusongspace.eventbee.com!
Madeline Jo & Friends is an alternative folk band from Pittsburgh, PA. Truly best friends, the 7 piece ensemble never fails to have an absolute blast on stage as they blend the sounds of traditional American folk music with newer indie rock and pop elements. This is reflected in their instrumentation, with acoustic guitar and tambourine appearing alongside electric bass and keys.
Capital Campaign Update

Thanks to the generosity of our congregation, the Warming Our Welcome, Brightening Our Future capital campaign has raised $1.1 million and is already delivering results. Completed projects include new LED sanctuary lighting, a restored dimmer system, and upgraded video and camera technology. Additional interior, outdoor, and infrastructure improvements—including careful planning for RE Wing heating and cooling—are underway. Learn more about what’s been accomplished and what’s next.
