Men’s Group

Each summer a number of EXCURSIONS are planned for the Men’s Group.  You should have received a notice about them.  ALL MEN of 1st Church are invited to join in.   IF you were NOT on the mailing list, contact Jim Reitz at j5650r@comcast,net and the list will be sent to you of – Hikes – and other events

1. HIKE – Saturday – June 13 – A local flat, interesting hike (I think). Let’s meet near my apartment. You can park free on Ellsworth Avenue. I’m at the corner of 5th & Neville (Ellsworth ends at Neville). Let’s plan to meet at 9:00 a.m. We’ll hike to the George Washington Monument (Schenley Park) – Check out progress on the Charles Anderson Bridge – have a snack at the Phipps visitor center – hike through the Phipps outside garden and back to your cars. Figure two plus hours, including the snack.

2. DOCENT TOUR – Tuesday – June 23 – 2:00 P.M. – The International at Carnegie Art Museum – held every four years. We’ll meet by the gift shop. Try to be there by 1:45. Alice Lieb will be our docent. A one hour tour. The museum has made a change. There is now a charge for docent tours – $200.00 for a group, which I have paid. I’ll let you know later how much that is per person, max $20.00, likely less. We have 15 signed up so – THIS EXCURSION IS FILLED!

3. HIKE # 2 – Saturday July 11th. Meet at 9:00. Again, let’s meet outside my apartment at the corner of Neville & 5th in Oakland. Parking remains free on Ellsworth. I suggest parking here only because parking by the church can be limited. We’ll travel in 1 or 2 cars to Washington’s Landing. There is a large parking lot there. We’ll hike the Island and end up at Red Fin Blues for a late snack, desert or lunch.

4. THE ILLUSION MUSEUM – Saturday – July 25th – Let’s meet at the church by 8:30. We will take what cars we need and drive to the Wise Country Biscuit Restaurant on the North Side to fuel-up! Then we’ll drive to the museum – about 1 mile – I’ll provide more specific directions later, when we have the names of those signed up. It takes about 1 hour to go through the museum. The admission charge is – $23.32 per person.

5. UU COFFEE HOUR – July 26 – 11:30. YES, you agreed to do this. All different groups within the church have been taking turns providing food for the coffee hour in the Undercroft after church. We’ll need at least 7 or 8 men to sign up to bring one food item each. I’ll send out more information later, including a – LONG – list I have compiled of items from which you can choose – just as a prompt.

6. PROTOHAVEN – 214 Trenton Avenue, Wilkinsburg – August 8 th. This is an amazing place where you can make ALMOST ANYTHING. We’ll do a tour and perhaps each make something. I’ll attach to this message a page that lists what can be done there. I’m going back to make some gifts for family. Let’s meet at church at 8:30. We’ll go to Nancy’s, a great breakfast place in Wilkinsburg, then to Photohaven – 10 minutes away. 10:00 -12:00. There will be a limit of 10 men to be able to sign up. (Nick Izzo used to be a member, if you want to talk to someone about it).

7. EECM MEAL: Every year for many years the Men’s Group has prepared, delivered and often served a meal at East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM). Usually we have done this the 1st Sunday in June, but that date was spoken for, so – Sunday – August 2nd – we are scheduled. I’ll be asking for sign-ups later. We need about 6 or 7 men. We have to secure the food, prepared it and deliver it. As you know, I have no car, so I will need help both securing the food and delivering it to EECM. More on this later.

8. HIKE Maybe a Sept Hike? Any interest? Nothing planned, but I have some ideas of where, we just need to decide if there is enough interest. Contact Jim Reitz, j5650r@comcast.net with any questions or interest!
