Anti-Racism Resources for UU Families

Dear families,

I know this must be one of the hardest times you’ve ever had.  So much has descended upon us all at once and suddenly, we all feel like we have to be experts at everything!  I certainly share some of those same fears and concerns.  In such times, pulling together is one of the best things we can do, and part of that is looking for help.

I am happy to say that the UUA has done a very good job of thoroughly addressing a lot of issues like recent events for children and families.  These resources are useful for anyone of any age, and rather than separate them out, I am simply going to list them here for you to explore:

Trauma Resources for Families and Congregations – Helpful resources on how to talk to children about violence in the news.
Family Discussion Suggestions:  Identity and Race – Talking to children specifically about race and about all the intersectional aspects of our identities.
Talking about Race: Start the Conversation – A resource for all families, but especially for parents with children and youth of marginalized racial identities.
Black Lives Matter Instructional Library – A lot of read-aloud books for kids!
Teaching Tolerance – Tried and true resource for anyone teaching about equity and racial justice; includes stories and articles to share or read together
Doctrine of Discovery and the Rights of Indigenous People – A thorough overview of the Doctrine of Discovery and how it continues to affect indigenous peoples here and abroad today; and what we can do about it.
Dismantle White Supremacy – For those of you, and you know who you are, who still flinch at the term!  Very helpful info.
Black Lives Matter and Building a Movement for Racial Justice – Extensive list of fantastic videos, lectures, books, films, and other multimedia from UUA events and actions.
Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism (BLUU) – Worship, education, encouragement, and resources specifically for Black UUs.

Please also remember that I and your minister are both available when you need an ear, some pastoral support, or have more questions and concerns.  Please ask for help, and let us be there for you!

Holding you all in my hearts, and especially those of you who, like me, are particularly hit close to home by the recent events in the news:  YOU. ARE. NOT. ALONE.
