Social Justice in Pittsburgh in Historical Perspective
The Speaker: Daniel Holland, PhD, is the 2025-2026 Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Center for African-American Urban Studies and the Economy (CAUSE) in the History Department at Carnegie Mellon University. Dan’s recent professional positions Director of Research and Policy for the Lower Marshall-Shadeland
Development Initiative on Pittsburgh’s North Side, and senior advisor for
the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s Pittsburgh Branch. Dan is also
Founder and Past CEO of the Young Preservationists Association of Pittsburgh. He was the primary researcher for the first PHMC-sponsored survey of African American historical resources, which culminated in the book, African American Historic Site Survey of Allegheny County, 1760-1960 (1994). Another of Dr. Holland’s books is, “Communities of Resistance and Resilience in the Post-Industrial City: A Transnational Perspective from Lyon and Pittsburgh,1980-2010” (Routledge, 2024).
His Talk: Dr. Holland will discuss social justice in Pittsburgh in historical perspective, with a focus on fair housing and community reinvestment. He will connect the past to the present, using the Hill and Manchester as proxies for Black Pittsburgh as a whole.
